Yellow Lens Glasses - Protect Your Eyes and Enhance Your Vision

What Are Yellow Lens Glasses?

Yellow lens glasses use yellow or amber-tinted lenses. They filter some shorter wavelengths of visible light. Depending on the tint and design, they can change colour perception. They also affect how contrast and glare are experienced.

Yellow lenses are sometimes marketed as blue light blocking glasses, particularly for computer and smartphone use. However, the terms are not exactly the same. Blue-light filtering lenses can be clear or lightly tinted, while yellow lenses usually produce a more noticeable change in colour.

Blue light filtering varies between products. A yellow tint does not show exactly how much blue light is blocked.

Do Yellow Lens Glasses Help with Screen Use?

Digital screens can cause tired eyes, dryness, headaches or blurred vision. This is often called digital eye strain.

However, current research does not show strong evidence that blue-light filtering glasses consistently reduce digital eye strain. Blue light from normal digital screens has also not been shown to damage the eyes during everyday use.

Screen discomfort is often linked to prolonged near work and reduced blinking. Glare and brightness also play a role.

Take regular breaks and blink frequently to help tired eyes. Adjust brightness and reduce glare. Suitable lubricating eye drops may also help, depending on your symptoms.

Yellow Lenses and Blue Light

Blue light is part of the visible spectrum. It exists in daylight, artificial lighting and digital screens.

A yellow or amber tint can reduce the amount of shorter-wavelength visible light reaching the eye. The stronger the tint, the more noticeable the change in colour perception is likely to be.

Some people prefer the warmer appearance of yellow lenses. However, they are not necessary for normal screen use. Evidence does not support claims that they prevent eye damage.

Can Yellow Lens Glasses Improve Sleep?

Evening light exposure can influence your circadian rhythm. Bright screens near bedtime may make it harder to wind down.

Some market blue light glasses to improve sleep. Research has not established a consistent benefit from these lenses.

Reduce screen time before bed if it affects your sleep. Lower brightness or use a device's night mode.

What About Yellow Glasses for Night Driving?

Yellow lenses are also sometimes sold as night-driving glasses with claims that they reduce glare or improve contrast.

Yellow tints change the colour of incoming light. There is little evidence they improve nighttime driving performance. Tinted lenses also reduce light reaching the eyes in dark conditions.

An eye examination is best if you have problems with glare, halos or reduced night vision.

Yellow Glasses for Contact Lens Wearers

People who wear contact lenses can also wear yellow-tinted or other non-prescription glasses over their lenses if they wish.

Contact lens wearers may notice dry or tired eyes. People blink less when concentrating on digital screens. This contributes to dryness.

Yellow glasses do not treat the underlying cause of dryness. Take regular breaks and blink more. Check if your wearing schedule is appropriate.

Some lubricating eye drops work with contact lenses. Others require you to remove lenses first. Always check the product instructions.

Speak to your optometrist if dryness occurs regularly. Do not simply try to mask the symptoms.

How to Choose Yellow Lens Glasses

The right yellow lens glasses depend on when and why you plan to use them.

Consider:

  • Tint intensity: A stronger yellow or amber tint filters more short-wavelength light but also changes colour perception more noticeably.
  • Comfort and fit: Choose frames that fit comfortably if you expect to wear them for long periods.
  • Lens quality: Good optical quality is more important than marketing claims about a particular percentage of blue light being blocked.
  • Anti-reflective coating: This may help reduce reflections from the front and back surfaces of the lenses.
  • How you plan to use them: Glasses intended for daytime computer use may have different requirements from tinted eyewear used outdoors.

An optometrist can advise on yellow lenses if you require vision correction. They ensure the tint suits your prescription.

Caring for Yellow Lens Glasses

Care for yellow lens glasses like other spectacles. Use a suitable cloth and cleaning product. Store them in a protective case.

If you wear the glasses over contact lenses, continue to follow normal contact lens hygiene. Wash and dry your hands before handling your lenses and follow the recommended replacement schedule.

Yellow Lens Glasses: What Should You Expect?

Yellow lenses change the spectrum of light. Some wearers prefer the warmer tint for comfort in specific situations.

They are not proven protection against eye strain or sleep problems. Instead, look at your screen habits and eye health.
