Why Truls Chooses Contact Lenses for CrossFit

Training is a big part of Truls Mosegaard’s life. What started years ago as an interest in CrossFit has developed into something much more serious, with regular training and competition becoming a natural part of his everyday routine.

Truls used to wear glasses, but as training became more intense, contact lenses gradually became the better fit.

I asked Truls why he made the switch, what difference contact lenses make during CrossFit and why they now feel like the natural choice whenever training is part of the day.

“I do not want to think about my glasses during a workout”

What made you start using contact lenses?

– Training was probably the biggest reason. Glasses are fine in everyday life, but CrossFit is different. You move quickly, you sweat, you lift, you jump and you are constantly changing position. Out there, they simply did not work.

For Truls, glasses did not just get in the way during training — they simply did not work.

– If you are doing burpees, box jumps or a heavy barbell movement, glasses are impossible to keep on. They slide down your nose the moment you start sweating, they fly off during burpees, and when you are under a heavy barbell, the last thing you want is to stop and push them back up. I even tried a strap, but they still fogged up and slipped. With lenses, I can forget about that completely.

Truls had his contact lenses fitted by an optician and uses the lens model and prescription values that work for his eyes.

Contact lenses fit the way he trains

CrossFit combines strength, conditioning and technical movements, often within the same session. One workout can include heavy lifting, running and gymnastics only minutes apart.

Do you notice the difference most during certain movements?

– Definitely during the more intense workouts. When your heart rate is high and everything is moving fast, it is nice not having frames in your field of vision. I can just focus on the next rep.

He also appreciates having a clear field of vision during heavy lifts and technical movements.

– When I am under a barbell or moving quickly, I want to see naturally in every direction. I do not want to be aware of the edge of a frame.

Competition makes the difference even clearer

Truls has competed in CrossFit and functional fitness for years. His public competition records include CrossFit Open participation and a first-place finish in the men’s Masters 45–49 division at the 2025 Danish functional fitness championship.

Competition days can be long, with several demanding events, warm-ups and transitions to keep track of.

Do contact lenses make a bigger difference when you compete?

– Yes. On competition day there is already enough to think about: the workout, the pacing, the game plan and what comes next. I do not want glasses to be another thing on that list.

For Truls, removing small distractions makes it easier to stay focused on the performance itself.

– When you compete, you notice how much the small things matter. If something can be simpler, that is usually a good thing.

And then there are the sunglasses

There is another detail that often stands out in photos of Truls competing: the colourful sports sunglasses.

I have to ask about the sunglasses – they seem to have become something of a trademark?

– Haha, yes, I think they probably have. It is a fun accessory more than anything. Totally impractical, but that is what makes it fun.

Because his prescription sits in the contact lenses, the sunglasses are just for fun.

I can throw them off, lose them, wear them backwards — it does not matter. I can still see.

They are not really gear. More like a mood.

From training choice to everyday habit

At first, contact lenses were mainly connected to training. Over time, they became a more natural part of Truls’ everyday life as well.

Do you still wear glasses?

– Yes, sometimes. I have nothing against glasses. But if I know I am training, competing or going to be active for most of the day, I almost always choose lenses.

For him, it is not really about replacing glasses completely. It is about having both options and choosing what works best for the day.

– I like having both choices. But when movement is a big part of the day, contact lenses are usually the obvious one.

“They simply suit an active life”

For Truls, contact lenses are no longer something he thinks very much about. And that is exactly why they work so well for him.

What do you appreciate most about them today?

– That I forget I am wearing them. I put them in, train, go about my day and do not really think about them again.

With training playing such a central role in his life, contact lenses have become a practical part of the routine rather than something special.

– If you are active, you want things to work without getting in the way. For me, contact lenses do exactly that.
